What sort of assignments
do you accept?
Pretty well any photographic assignment that is to be shot
in a photojournalistic style. In recent years this has ranged
from editorial portraits and photo essays for magazines , Aid
organizations and Exhibitions, to Corporate Annual Reports,
Executive portraits and re-branding, to book projects, and
to creating digital assets for Government and Corporate photo
libraries. |
|
What do you mean by ‘photojournalistic
style’?
I worked in London from 1978 till 1981 for the Observer, where
there was a total commitment to, and respect of, the power
of imagery. The editorial policy was that their photographers
would have their own voices. Often our photographs and photo-essays
stood alone, no copy needed, the photograph comfortably telling
its own tale.
That is photojournalism: storytelling, a tradition that has
developed over human history. it may have started with simple
line drawings on cave walls, and moved on to myths passed down
from generation to generation, then to the printing press,
to cinema, to photography and now the internet. |
|
What do you mean by ‘photo libraries’ and ‘digital assets’?
All enterprises, from small business to large corporates and
government departments, must communicate their message to staff,
clients, shareholders, stakeholders, and the public. A well
planned and maintained library of high quality photographs
in multiple formats are increasingly valuable digital assets
that enhance communication, particularly in internet and
intranet applications. |
|
Why are digital assets so valuable for
internet and intranet applications?
The most effective internet and social network sites are designed
around imagery and short grabs of information presented in
easily accessable and engaging formats. The internet audience,
most especially on social network sites, is reacting with
simple human curiosity in a very personal way to other people’s
visual stories.
Enterprises must develop a library of digital assets using photojournalistic
storytelling techniques if they are to be successful in communicating
their message to these target online audiences. |
|
What do you mean by ‘multiple
formats’?
A well planned shoot with defined ‘stories’ will result in
a suite of digital assets for promotions, posters, brochures,
publications, discussion papers, annual reports, and staff
recruitment and training materials. These are delivered in
the appropriate high quality formats required for traditional
print media, or optimised for web applications.
The same material can be used to create engaging story telling
formats required for conference, intranet and internet audiences,
from simple slideshows and quicktime movies through to sophisticated
multi-media photo-essays, movies and presentations. |
|
Do you accept Private
commissions for personal or family portraits?
Yes, with consideration to style and content and my areas
of expertise. |
|
Do you shoot weddings?
I have photographed some weddings, but only when the coverage
was in a photojournalist or less formal style. I am available
to shoot Muslim weddings where custom dictates a female photographer. |
|
Where do you work,
and are you available to travel?
I am based in Sydney, Australia. However my work takes me
all over the country and to many overseas destinations, particularly
Southeast Asia in recent years. |
|
What formats do
you shoot in?
On most assignments I shoot digital in 35mm SLR. If the shoot
requires film, I work in 35mm and medium format, as either
colour and black and white. |
|
What formats do
you deliver in?
An explanation of a wide range of delivery formats and a ‘shopping’
list' is available on request, and your requirements discussed
and agreed at the time of preparing cost estimates and quotes. |
|
What do you charge?
This varies according to the specific time, equipment, and
delivery requirements of each assignment, the end-use of the
material, and copyright and licence agreements. All assignments
are quoted and agreed up front in writing and are confirmed
by an official order. |
|
When and how do
I pay?
This is by negotiation for each assignment, but normally up
front payment is required for part of the shooting fees, and
for the direct costs of film, processing, and out-of-pocket
travel and miscellaneous expenses that have been agreed. The
balance is payable prior to or immediately on delivery. Payment
is normally by direct bank transfer. Payment by Cheque can
be arranged in some circumstances. |
|
Who holds the Copyright?
The copyright of the work commissioned is held by Lorrie
Graham as the photographer, except in some instances such as
commissions from Government Departments, and weddings. You
may negotiate a full Copyright buyout, or licence the work
exclusively for a specified number of years. This can be extended
further by negotiation. All licence fees are payable up front. |
|
Can I buy or license
any of the images on this website?
Yes, original prints in limited editions can be purchased
or usage licenced for most images subject to your end-use requirements.
