Works in progress

I always try to have a couple of personal projects on the go ......

Having lived in Newtown, an inner city suburb of Sydney, for the past six years I’m constantly amazed by the rapid changes.

The lovely old butcher disappeared when the GST was introduced and the small mechanic’s garage down the road with its ageing grease monkeys, soon after. But Heather is still here, she lives around the corner. Her hair, large and red one day flat and mauve the next.

The mix of faces has changed and I am part of that, so I feel a need to document the suburb. Capture the character and faces of the place, It was one of the very reasons I decided to live here.

Another area of interest is the growing farmers market scene around the country. My interest, the human story behind this movement.

Tim Hansen’s day starts at 3.30 am and finishes around 11pm when he’s running a stall at one of several markets on his round. You wonder if it’s worth it for Hansen, head of “Managery Creek Farmed Venison”. Hansen sees it as a good way to connect and sell a story, more effectively than advertising.

So the project is the stories and pictures of the small entrepreneurs behind Australia’s push for pure food, their sacrifices, passions how they get their idea from the farm to the market.
